Baseball Fielding Training for Centreville, VA Players

The year Centreville families get surprised is 13

SYA Little League Baseball runs from 4 to 12. SYA Babe Ruth picks up at 13 and carries through 18. On paper it is a registration change. On the field the diamond grows underneath him, and almost every defensive habit he built on a small infield gets tested at once.

Longer base paths mean longer throws, and a longer throw is not the same throw. The arm slot that worked from 60 feet away starts leaking accuracy at full distance. Range matters more, because the same ground ball that used to be a routine two steps to the left is now four steps and a plant. And the ball comes off a bigger bat, hit by a kid who has also grown six inches.

Centreville has plenty of places to play. SYA Sports Park on Bull Run Post Office Road opened in 2006 on about 120 acres, and there are diamonds at Liberty and Stone middle schools, Union Mill, Virginia Run and Ellanor C. Lawrence Park on Route 28. What there is not much of is unhurried time to fix footwork while 11 other kids wait their turn.

What we work on

Fielding is footwork before it is hands. Most bad throws start two steps earlier than the throw.

We build it in pieces. First step and read off the bat, so he is moving before the ball tells him twice. Approach angle, so he arrives at the ball on a line that leaves him room to throw. Backhand and glove-side footwork, which is where range actually comes from at the bigger diamond. Then the throw itself: transfer, feet, and the different releases a longer diamond asks for, including throwing from the hole, throwing on the move, and the shorter feed on a double play turn.

A shortstop, a third baseman and a right fielder are not doing the same job, and we do not pretend otherwise. Coach Raul Rodriguez runs position-specific training and game awareness, the part most kids never get in a rec practice. Owner and head coach Alonso Ruz Vera brings four years of college baseball and a master's in exercise science to the movement work underneath it.

Sessions are one hour, coach-led, one athlete at a time. Parents are welcome to watch. The full breakdown lives on our baseball fielding training program page.

The drive from Centreville

BTD trains athletes from Centreville at our facility on Robertson Drive in Manassas, about 15 to 20 minutes down Route 28. There is no BTD facility in Centreville. Of the Fairfax County towns we serve, Centreville is the closest. More on training for Centreville baseball and softball families.

Centreville baseball fielding FAQ

He is 12 and moving up to SYA Babe Ruth next year. Is that the right time to start?

It is a good time. The winter before the diamond changes is the cleanest window you get, because he can rebuild footwork and throwing distance without a game on Saturday judging it. Waiting until he has been overmatched for half a season means undoing habits instead of building them.

Do you train outfielders, or only infielders?

Both. Outfield work is its own thing: routes, first step on a ball hit over his head, playing the ball into a throw, and hitting a cutoff man with something a middle infielder can handle. It gets ignored almost everywhere, which is why it is worth an hour.

His arm is fine. Why is he short-hopping the throw from short?

Usually his feet. A throw from the hole on the bigger diamond needs a different setup, and most kids try to fix it by throwing harder. We look at the approach and the transfer before the arm.

Can he work fielding and hitting in the same hour?

We would rather not split it. An hour on defense is an hour on defense. Plenty of our athletes run both, on separate days. If hitting is the priority right now, start with baseball hitting training for Centreville players.

What does he bring to a fielding session?

A glove, a bat, and cleats. We supply everything else.
