Baseball Hitting Training for Centreville, VA Players
Roster spots in Centreville are decided in a handful of at-bats
Southwestern Youth Association is not a small rec league. SYA serves more than 13,000 children and about 5,000 families across southwestern Fairfax County. Baseball there runs from age 4 all the way through 18: Little League from 4 to 12, Babe Ruth from 13 to 18, and the SYA Mets on the travel side.
That scale cuts both ways. There are enough kids in Centreville for real competition at every age. There are also enough that a spot on the Mets, or a varsity bat at Centreville High on Union Mill Road or at Westfield on the Sully Station and Virginia Run side, gets decided by a handful of swings in front of a coach with a long line behind him.
Centreville baseball reached the 2026 VHSL Class 6 state quarterfinals and drew Battlefield, the team that went on to win the whole thing. Westfield has been a state finalist twice. Neither program is short on bodies. What usually separates the kids who stick is what the bat does when somebody is watching.
What we work on
Hitting is the most measurable thing your son does on a field, which is the entire reason to train it in January instead of guessing in April.
His first session sets a baseline on HitTrax: exit velocity, launch angle, distance, spray chart. Every session after is tracked against it, so progress is something you can read instead of something a coach tells you. Blast Motion mounts on his bat knob and reports bat speed, attack angle, time to impact, and on-plane efficiency. Win Reality adds VR reps against pitch sequencing and two-strike counts.
Baseball hitting is its own problem. The pitch arrives downhill from 60 feet 6 inches, so his attack angle target is set to match a falling plane. Our hitters average a 3 to 5 MPH exit velocity increase within the first four weeks. See our baseball hitting training program and how HitTrax tracking works.
Sessions are one hour, coach-led, one athlete at a time, with owner and head coach Alonso Ruz Vera and Coach Raul Rodriguez. Parents are welcome to watch.
The drive from Centreville
BTD trains athletes from Centreville at our facility on Robertson Drive in Manassas, about 15 to 20 minutes straight down Route 28 from the SYA office on Centreville Crest Lane. There is no second location. Centreville is the closest Fairfax County market to us, and for most families it is a shorter weeknight trip than driving the other way into the county. Centreville baseball hitting FAQ
When should he start if he is trying out for the SYA Mets?
Give it a winter. Swing changes that hold up under tryout pressure need weeks of reps, not a tune-up the week before. Exit velocity moves faster than mechanics do, so starting in November or December means the number a coach sees at tryouts is already different.
Do you train Little League age hitters, or only travel players?
Both. Athletes start with us at age 8 and train through high school and competitive travel ball. A 9-year-old in SYA Little League and a 16-year-old playing Babe Ruth and travel get the same hour of attention, aimed at different things.
He already plays at SYA Sports Park. Why train indoors?
SYA Sports Park on Bull Run Post Office Road opened in 2006 on about 120 acres, and it is a good complex. It is also outdoors and shared by thousands of kids. Field time is for playing. The cage is where you change something and find out in a week whether it held.
How is this different from a batting cage lesson closer to Centreville?
Rented cage time gives him swings. It does not tell you whether the swings got better. Here he gets a tracked baseline, a coach watching every rep, and data you can compare month to month.
What does he need to bring to the first session?
A bat, a glove, and cleats. We supply everything else.
