Softball Hitting Training for South Riding, VA Players

The pitching she is aiming at is very good right now

Lightridge, over in Aldie, was the 2026 VHSL Class 5 state softball runner-up. They lost the final 2 to 1 to Matoaca on a walk-off after going 24 and 1 in region play and winning 24 straight games on the way in. Their ace, Peyton Robinson, is a Georgia Tech commit who struck out nine in that final and held Matoaca scoreless through six innings.

That is the standard in this pocket of Loudoun County. Freedom on Riding Center Drive, the South Riding Freedom rather than the one in Woodbridge, and John Champe in Aldie feed the same neighborhoods. Girls here are not preparing for average pitching.

Locally, softball also finally sits alongside baseball. Loudoun South Little League launched its own girls softball program in fall 2023, created to fill the gap after Loudoun Girls Little League Softball dissolved. So unlike Ashburn, where a family with a son and a daughter deals with two separate organizations, both sports here run through one. It also means a lot of South Riding girls came to structured hitting instruction late.

The gap we see most often

She can hit a fastball. Put a change or a drop or a rise in the same at-bat and the whole thing collapses.

That is not a swing problem, and drilling more swings does not fix it. Out of a windmill circle at 43 feet, the ball is on her before recognition, decision and movement can happen in sequence. They have to overlap. A hitter with a long path is forced to commit before the pitch has told her anything.

So we start with time to impact. Blast Motion bat sensor data gives us bat speed, attack angle, time to impact and on-plane efficiency, and shortening that path is how she buys back the beat she needs to read spin. Attack angle gets set for a ball arriving flat or climbing, not for a downhill baseball, which is why coaching a fastpitch hitter to swing up the way a baseball hitter does produces a season of pop-ups.

Sessions are one hour, coach-led, one athlete at a time, and hitters here average a 3 to 5 MPH exit velocity increase within the first four weeks. The drive from South Riding

BTD trains athletes from South Riding at our facility on Robertson Drive in Manassas, roughly 20 to 30 minutes, Route 50 east to Route 28 south. That is our only location. South Riding sits about eight or nine miles closer to us than Ashburn does, and with no diamonds inside the HOA, families here already build a drive into every practice. What level of pitching is she actually preparing for around here?

High. Lightridge reached the 2026 Class 5 state final behind a Division I commit, and the travel circuit in Loudoun County reflects that. We set her targets against what she will actually face, not against what would be fine somewhere softer.

She hits the fastball and nothing else. Where does that get fixed?

In two places. Time to impact, so she is not forced into an early guess, and recognition, so the guess she does make is informed. We check the Blast numbers first because a long path makes everything else unfixable.

She plays LSLL softball. Is that enough, or does she need travel?

Rec is a fine place to be, and plenty of our hitters are rec players preparing for a travel tryout. What rec cannot give her is 60 tracked swings with a coach watching every one. That is what the hour is for.

How long is the drive, honestly?

Twenty to thirty minutes depending on Route 28. Evening traffic is the variable, so plan for thirty.

What does she need to bring?

A bat, a glove, and cleats. We supply everything else.
