In Centreville, a softball family can move up without leaving the organization

Most towns make you go shopping when your daughter outgrows rec ball. Centreville does not. SYA Little League Softball runs from 7 to 16 and SYA Travel Softball, the Xplosion, runs from 9 to 18. Both live under the same organization, the one that serves more than 13,000 kids and about 5,000 families across southwestern Fairfax County.

That is a real advantage. It also means the step up happens quietly, without a change of jersey to warn you. One season she is seeing rec pitching. The next she is standing in against a girl who has been pitching year round since she was nine.

The circle is where that jump lives. From 43 feet, a good pitcher takes away a hitter's time before she takes away anything else. Everything that used to work, waiting a beat, seeing it deep, gathering and going, stops working. Most girls do not lose their swing at that step. They lose their clock.

What we work on

Her first session sets a softball baseline on HitTrax: exit velocity, launch angle, distance, spray chart. Softball numbers, compared against softball. Blast Motion goes on her bat knob and reports bat speed, attack angle, time to impact, and on-plane efficiency.

Time to impact is the one that matters most at this step. Shortening her path is how she buys back the beat the faster circle took away. Attack angle matters for a different reason. The ball arrives flat or climbing out of a release point near the pitcher's hip, so her target angle is not a baseball hitter's, and coaching her to swing uphill through a rising ball is how you get a season of pop-ups.

The drive from Centreville

BTD trains athletes from Centreville at our facility on Robertson Drive in Manassas, about 15 to 20 minutes down Route 28. We do not have a Centreville location. She is moving up from SYA rec softball to the Xplosion. When should she start?

Before tryouts, not after. The pitching speed jump is the whole challenge, and timing work takes weeks. A fall or winter start means she walks in already used to a shorter reaction window instead of learning it in front of the coaches deciding her roster spot.

Is this fastpitch instruction, or baseball hitting handed to a girl?

Fastpitch. Her HitTrax baseline is set as a softball baseline, her attack angle target is set for a ball on an upward plane from 43 feet, and her pitch recognition work uses fastpitch spin types instead of baseball breaking balls. Coach Raul Rodriguez works with both sports and does not mix the cues.

She hits the fastball fine and misses everything else. What is that?

Usually a decision problem rather than a swing problem. A change or a drop out of the same arm speed only shows up if she is reading release and spin early enough to do something about it. We check her time to impact first, because a hitter with a long path has to commit before the information arrives.

Can she train during the spring season, or only in the offseason?

Both. In season we keep the volume low and work on approach and timing rather than rebuilding anything. Winter is when we make actual changes, because there is room to be temporarily worse before being better.

What does she need to bring?

A bat, a glove, and cleats. We supply the rest.
