Softball Fielding Training for Haymarket, VA Players
Haymarket Softball Families Are Already Driving
The 20169 area has about 28,300 residents, and the diamond programs at Battlefield are as strong as they have been. The softball team was the Class 6 Region B runner up in 2026 and reached the state quarterfinals.
What the area does not have is a dedicated Haymarket rec softball league. That is a fact about how youth sports are organized here, not a knock on anyone. GHBL is the local rec organization and it plays baseball out of Long Park. Girls who want fastpitch go travel or register somewhere else, which means Haymarket softball families are already in the car most weeks.
So the question is not whether you are willing to drive. You already are. The question is whether any of that driving is buying your daughter individual work on her defense, or just more team practices and more games.
Sixty Feet Changes Everything
Softball base paths are 60 feet. A runner out of the box is on top of the first baseman before an infielder has finished a normal exchange. There is no version of softball infield play where a girl gets to field the ball, gather, take a crow hop, and throw. The play has to be finished from where she caught it.
That is why the work here looks different from baseball defense. Short hops taken in tight, so she learns to trust the hop instead of backing up on it. Attacking a slow roller instead of circling it. A glove to hand exchange fast enough to survive a 60 foot race. Footwork on the turn with a runner arriving a full second earlier than a baseball runner would.
Then there is the slap game, which is close to universal in this area at the travel level. A left handed slapper moving toward the pitcher pulls the corners in, changes the first step for the middle infield, and forces a third baseman to cover the bunt and the swing at the same time. Defending it is a positioning and reading skill that general defense work does not cover.
The position by position progression is on our full softball fielding training program page, and the shared fundamentals both sports use are covered in our fielding program for both sports. Sessions are one hour, coach led by Alonso Ruz Vera and Coach Raul Rodriguez. Athletes start at age 8 and train through high school and competitive travel ball.
The Drive from Haymarket
BTD trains athletes from Haymarket at our facility at 11516 Robertson Dr in Manassas, about 12 miles and roughly 19 minutes on VA-234 Business, Sudley Road. It is the road this area already uses for shopping and I-66, so it is not a detour. For everything else, see baseball and softball training for Haymarket families.
Haymarket Softball Fielding FAQ
Where do Haymarket girls play softball?
There is no dedicated Haymarket rec softball league we can point you to. Most families in the 20169 area play travel ball or register in a neighboring community, and Battlefield is the high school program for this area.
Why is reaction time such a big deal in softball infield play?
Because the base paths are 60 feet instead of 90. The runner reaches first roughly a full second sooner, which removes the gather and the crow hop from most plays. Clean feet and a fast exchange decide more outs than arm strength does.
How far is BTD from Haymarket, VA?
About 19 minutes on VA-234 Business, Sudley Road, to Robertson Drive in Manassas. We train at one facility and athletes from Haymarket come to us.
Does my daughter need a strong arm to play the infield?
Less than you would think. The throws are short. What separates infielders in this sport is the first step, the read on the hop, and how quickly the ball gets out of the glove.
Can she train here during her travel season?
Yes. Plenty of players from this area keep one session a week through the spring, usually on a weeknight, to maintain the work they built in the offseason between tournaments.
