Softball Fielding Training for Gainesville, VA Players
Travel Practice Is Team Practice
Most softball players in Gainesville are on a travel roster, because there is no dedicated Gainesville rec softball league for families to sign up with locally. That is an area fact, not a criticism of anyone running youth sports here. It also shapes what your daughter's week looks like.
A travel practice is two hours, a full roster, and one coach hitting fungo to nine spots at once. It is a good use of the time available. It is not where an individual gets her feet fixed. Twelve players cycling through a ground ball line means about six real reps each and nobody watching her transfer closely enough to say anything useful.
Meanwhile the standard around here is high. Battlefield, which serves northern Gainesville addresses, was the Class 6 Region B softball runner up in 2026 and reached the state quarterfinals. Girls who want those innings are not competing on effort. They are competing on whether the routine play is genuinely routine.
What Softball Defense Demands That Baseball Does Not
The base paths are 60 feet. That is 30 feet shorter than baseball, and it is the number that drives everything about infield play in this sport. A ground ball to third that a baseball player has time to circle and set up on has to be attacked in softball, because the runner is already halfway there. Less reaction time, shorter throws, and a much smaller margin on the exchange.
Then there is the slapper. A left handed hitter moving toward the pitcher changes where the corners stand, changes the first step for the middle infield, and forces a third baseman to play in on the grass while still covering the bunt. Defending it is a positioning and footwork skill, and it is where a girl who has only done general defense work gets exposed.
So the session is built around short hops taken in tight, the attack angle on a slow roller, footwork on the turn with a runner arriving early, and the throw from a compromised base. Arm strength matters less here than in baseball. Clean feet and a fast exchange matter more. The breakdown by position is on our full softball fielding training program page.
Sessions are one hour, coach led by Alonso Ruz Vera and Coach Raul Rodriguez. Athletes start at age 8 and train through high school and competitive travel ball. Many Gainesville families run defense one week and softball hitting training the next.
The Drive from Gainesville
BTD trains athletes from Gainesville at our facility at 11516 Robertson Dr in Manassas, about 10 miles and roughly 15 to 20 minutes on VA-234 Business, on the Wellington Road side near Manassas Regional Airport. If your daughter is already traveling to tournaments most weekends, this is the shortest drive on her schedule. Gainesville Softball Fielding FAQ
Why does my daughter need individual fielding work if her travel team practices twice a week?
Team practice is built for a roster, not a player. In a normal ground ball line she gets a handful of reps and no one is watching her exchange closely. An hour on her own is a different kind of work.
How is softball infield defense different from baseball?
Sixty foot base paths instead of ninety. That means less reaction time, shorter throws where the exchange decides the play, and a slap game that changes infield positioning entirely. It is not a scaled down version of baseball defense.
How far is BTD from Gainesville, VA?
About 15 to 20 minutes on VA-234 Business to Robertson Drive in Manassas. We train at one facility and athletes from Gainesville come to us.
Do you work on defending slappers?
Yes. Corner positioning, the first step for middle infielders, and the read on a slapper who can also swing away. It comes up constantly in this area and rarely gets individual attention.
What age do you start softball fielding work?
Age 8. Early sessions are footwork, glove position, and clean exchanges. Position specific work starts when a coach begins using her in one spot.
