One At Bat in the Seventh Inning

On June 18, 2026, Battlefield beat Independence 6 to 3 for the VHSL Class 6 state baseball championship, the first baseball state title in school history. The swing everyone in the 20169 area is still talking about was a seventh inning grand slam by junior Luke Raflo. Head coach Jay Burkhart was in his 16th season. The year before, Battlefield lost the final to Gainesville, so that game was the answer to this one.

Here is what is useful about that for your son. The difference in a seventh inning at bat is rarely bat speed. Every kid in that lineup had bat speed. The difference is a hitter who walked up with a plan, recognized what was coming, and did not shrink the swing when the count got long.

That part almost never gets trained. A boy in Haymarket can take 200 swings a week in a cage at Long Park and still have no idea what he is looking for on 1-2 against a pitcher throwing him nothing but sliders away.

Building an At Bat, Not Just a Swing

We start with a HitTrax baseline so we know what the swing produces: exit velocity, launch angle spread, spray chart, hard contact rate. It also shows where he is giving away at bats, because a spray chart that is all pull side means he is guessing fastball every pitch and gets exposed the second someone changes speeds.

From there the work is approach. Counts get added in the cage. Machine velocity goes up so he has to respect it. He gets a specific job on 0-0 and a different one on 1-2, and he says out loud what he is hunting before the pitch. That is uncomfortable at first and it is the point.

Pitch recognition runs alongside it through Win Reality pitch recognition training, which gives him decision reps against sequencing and velocity he would not face live for a couple more years. Recognition is the part that turns a plan into a swing in time.

The mechanical side, attack angle against a pitch arriving downhill from 60 feet 6 inches and age appropriate exit velocity benchmarks, is on our full baseball hitting training program page. What is a realistic two strike approach for a 13-year-old?

Choke up slightly, move up in the box, shorten the load, and hunt the fastball while staying on the ball long enough to handle a breaking pitch. Simple and repeatable beats complicated. We build it and then test it under counts.

How many sessions a week does a Haymarket travel player usually do?
