Baseball Fielding Training for Haymarket, VA Players

The Calendar Decides This One

James S. Long Regional Park on James Madison Highway is 230 acres with four diamonds and batting cages, and it is the home complex for the Gainesville Haymarket Baseball League. Everyone here just calls it Long Park. It is a good place to play baseball.

It is also busy. Four diamonds and a full league means practice slots are short and shared, and once the spring schedule starts, a team goes from two practices a week to one, then to none. From April on, the reps your player gets on defense are the ones that happen in a game, and a game gives an infielder maybe three chances.

So the window for actually changing how a kid fields is not the season. It is December through February, when there are no games to prepare for and nothing gets cut for the sake of Saturday. A player who spends those weeks rebuilding their first step shows up in March with a different glove, and their coach notices in the first week.

What Gets Worked, and Why It Is Baseball Specific

Baseball defense is defined by distance. The base paths are 90 feet, so a shortstop in the hole is making a long throw with their momentum carrying them away from the target, and a third baseman is finishing plays from a hundred plus feet out. Range matters here more than it does in softball, because there is more ground per fielder and more time in the air on every throw.

The offseason block covers first step and read off the bat, angles on the ball in the hole, working through a hop instead of waiting on it, and the transfer. Then the turn at second from both sides, which is a footwork sequence that has to be automatic and almost never gets individual attention in a team setting. Outfielders get routes, drop step, and throwing through the cutoff rather than right at it.

The full progression by position is on our full baseball fielding training program page. Sessions are one hour, coach led by Alonso Ruz Vera and Coach Raul Rodriguez, who have trained 500 plus athletes between them. Athletes start at age 8. If a player also needs first step quickness and arm care, we handle that through strength and conditioning work.

The Drive from Haymarket

BTD trains athletes from Haymarket at our facility at 11516 Robertson Dr in Manassas, about 12 miles and roughly 19 minutes on VA-234 Business, Sudley Road. From Long Park it is one road, the same one the 20169 area takes toward shopping and I-66. In January that drive gets an infielder the only ground balls available to them. See baseball and softball training for Haymarket families for the rest of what we run here.

Haymarket Baseball Fielding FAQ

What is the best time of year for a Haymarket player to work on infield defense?

December through February. Once GHBL and school schedules start, practice time shrinks and defense is the first thing that gets cut. The offseason is when a footwork change can be built without competing with Saturday's game.

How far is BTD from Long Park in Haymarket?

Roughly 19 minutes on VA-234 Business, Sudley Road, to Robertson Drive in Manassas. We train at one facility and athletes from Haymarket come to us.

My player plays four positions. Should they specialize?

Not before high school in most cases. Through 12 or 13 we build general infield actions that transfer everywhere. Position specific footwork becomes the focus when a coach starts committing them to one spot.

How many sessions does it take to change footwork?

A four week block is usually enough to make a new first step feel normal, and a full offseason is enough to make it hold under game speed. Footwork changes take longer to stick than swing changes because the old pattern is reflexive.

Do you work with outfielders or only infielders?

Both. Outfield sessions cover routes, the drop step, playing a ball in the gap, and hitting a cutoff man in stride, all of which matter more in baseball than in softball because of the distances involved.
