The Gainesville Haymarket Baseball League plays at Catharpin Park and James S. Long Regional Park. Those are good outdoor complexes. They are also grass and dirt in Virginia, which means from roughly November through February they are not producing ground balls for anybody, and in March and April a wet week takes them out for days at a time.

Ask a Gainesville coach what gets cut first when field time disappears. It is never batting practice. It is infield. A team with two hours on one diamond and a game Saturday spends it on live at bats, and the ground ball work that decides close games gets ten minutes at the end.

That is why Gainesville families drive to an indoor session. Not because their kid is behind, but because the calendar hands him four or five months where the only place to work on a first step is inside.

What We Work On, and Why It Is Baseball Specific

Baseball defense is a range and distance problem. The base paths are 90 feet, so a shortstop throws across the diamond with his momentum going the wrong way, and a third baseman finishes plays from foul territory. The corner outfielders have real ground to cover and long throws to hit a cutoff man in stride. None of that comes from a general defense session.

So the work is specific: first step and read off the bat, angles on a ball in the hole, taking a hop out front instead of waiting on it, and the transfer. Most throwing errors we see out of Gainesville middle infielders are exchange problems, not arm problems. The ball leaves the glove late or from the wrong slot, and the arm rushes to make up the time.

Sessions are one hour, coach led by Alonso Ruz Vera and Coach Raul Rodriguez, with 10 plus years of combined coaching experience between them. Athletes start at age 8. Plenty of Gainesville families pair a defense session with baseball hitting training in the same week.

The Drive from Gainesville

Where do Gainesville baseball players get infield reps in the winter?

Indoors. GHBL's outdoor diamonds at Catharpin Park and Long Park are not usable for defensive work from late fall through winter, so families come to us in Manassas for that stretch.

Do you train infielders indoors when GHBL fields are closed?

Yes. Rained out spring weeks are one of the most common reasons Gainesville families book a session, because infield work is the first thing a team cuts.

How far is BTD from Catharpin Park?

Roughly 15 to 20 minutes on VA-234 Business. We train at one facility, on Robertson Drive in Manassas, and athletes from Gainesville come to us.

My son has a strong arm but throws it away from short. What is that?

Almost always the exchange, not the arm. If the ball leaves the glove late or from an inconsistent slot, the throw has to be rushed. We film the transfer and fix the footwork feeding it.

What position does my son need to pick before starting?

None. At 8 to 12 we work general infield actions and let him play multiple spots. Position specific footwork becomes the focus once a high school or travel coach starts using him in one place.
