Baseball Fielding Training for Ashburn, VA Players
Twenty Diamonds and Not Enough Ground Balls
Dulles Little League does not have a home complex. It runs across roughly 20 small neighborhood and school diamonds scattered around Ashburn, so a family's field assignment can change by season, by division, sometimes by week. Tournament weekends push out to Philip A. Bolen Memorial Park in Leesburg, which has seven diamonds and is the closest thing in the county to one central park.
That setup keeps a lot of kids playing, which is the point. It also does something specific to defense. When a team gets ninety minutes on a shared diamond, batting practice takes the middle of it, and infield work becomes whatever fits at the end. Count the ground balls your son actually fields in a week of team practice. For most Ashburn players it is a low number, and it is lower still in the winter when the fields are frozen or booked.
Fielding is the skill that suffers first from that math. Nobody loses a swing over a rained out practice. Footwork goes fast.
What Baseball Fielding Training Is Here
Baseball defense has a size problem that softball does not. Ninety foot base paths mean the throw from deep in the hole is a genuine test of arm strength and exchange speed. Outfielders cover more ground and throw farther, and cut and relay work matters because the ball travels a long way before anyone touches it. Range responsibility is bigger, so the first step off the bat carries more weight than almost anything a player does with his glove.
That is what the hour targets. Pre-pitch setup and first step reads. Getting through the ball instead of waiting on it. Backhand and short hop work. Footwork on the turn at second, exchange speed, and throwing on the move from the positions your son actually plays. We coach it position-specific, because a corner outfielder and a third baseman are solving different problems.
Alonso Ruz Vera and Coach Raul Rodriguez run these sessions. Coach Raul's focus is fundamentals, game awareness and position work, and it shows most on the defensive side. Full drill detail sits on the baseball fielding training program page. Win Reality pitch recognition reps help on the mental side, since reading a hitter's swing is what starts a good first step.
The Drive, Told Straight
From Ashburn it is about 23 to 24 miles down Route 28 to Robertson Drive in Manassas. Figure 35 to 40 minutes clear, and up to 45 if you leave between 4:30 and 6:30. Route 28 is where the time goes.
BTD trains Ashburn athletes at our Manassas facility. We do not have a location in Loudoun County. Independence families already run this route for Cedar Run District games against Battlefield, Gainesville, Patriot, Osbourn and Osbourn Park, so the road is familiar to plenty of Ashburn parents.
Ashburn Baseball Fielding Questions
How bad is the drive, really?
Thirty-five to forty minutes most of the time. Forty-five in weekday rush on Route 28. About thirty on a Saturday morning, which is when most Ashburn families book.
Can he work on fielding indoors in January?
Yes, and that is the point. When Ashburn's shared diamonds are unusable, indoor reps on footwork, exchange and glove work are the only ones available.
Do you train specific positions or general infield?
Position-specific. Middle infield, corners, outfield reads and routes, and catchers. Tell us where his coach is playing him and we build the hour around it.
He already practices twice a week with the Ashburn Rebels. Does this conflict?
It usually fills a gap instead. Team practice is group reps against a schedule. A one hour session is his reps only, aimed at whatever cost him outs last season.
What age do you start?
Age 8 and up, through high school and travel ball. Bring a glove, a bat and cleats. We supply the rest and parents can watch.
